There is nothing more unpleasant than entering the shower and seeing the water coming up to your ankle. Most of the time, the problem is caused by debris or scale that clogs the drain. In addition to preventing the evacuation of water, the plug generates unpleasant smells due to the presence of bacteria. If you frequently encounter this kind of problem, be aware that there are quick and effective ways to keep your shower drain clean all the time. Beside, most of the materials you will need are everyday objects.

With vinegar and baking soda

First of all, before you proceed to unclog the shower drain, you must remove the drain cover. Some lids can come off in a simple pop off. Others will require the removal of some screws. Once the lid is detached, you can use a metal hanger to remove debris that clogs the leak. The water should flow slowly through the duct once the debris is removed.

If the flow of water is still slowing down, you can deduce that the drain isn’t clear of any traces of debris yet. For a thorough clean, you will need to use vinegar and baking soda. Just pour a cup of baking soda in the conduit before pouring a cup of white vinegar. Then, you will have to plug the drain hole with rags.

This will allow the mixture of vinegar and baking soda to act well through crackling. Allow the mixture to sit for at least 10 minutes. The final step is to boil three cups of water and pour the boiling water down the drain. This will rinse the mixture of vinegar and bicarbonate that will carry the remains of debris.

When the operation is complete, you will see that your shower drain will be clean and that the water will flow normally into the duct. In addition, bad smells will disappear instantly.

With an enzymatic cleaner

If you plan to clean the drain of a bathtub, hot water will be your best ally. Let the water run from the tub to soften debris stuck in the drain. You can also remove the drain cover and immerse it in boiling water to clean it thoroughly.

Enzymatic detergents are just as effective in cleaning the drain. You can use a specific detergent or a dishwasher. Pour a cup of detergent into the drain hole and let it sit for one-two hours. The detergent will loosen the dirt that is piling up in the drain. This will also apply to soap debris, hair clumps…which causes bad smells. If the stench doesn’t go away after this operation, you can still use the first method, including the use of vinegar and baking soda.
